Background of the study
Semantic mapping, the process of organizing and relating word meanings, is influenced by bilingual cognitive processes. Among university students in Anambra, Igbo speakers often navigate dual linguistic systems, leading to unique patterns of semantic association. This study explores how bilingualism affects semantic mapping in Igbo by comparing the conceptual networks that emerge from the interaction between Igbo and English. Classroom observations and cognitive tests suggest that bilingual students may develop broader or more flexible semantic fields, as they draw on lexical resources from both languages (Ugo, 2023). Such dual influences can enhance creativity but also lead to interference, where meanings are blended or shifted. By analyzing written essays, word association tasks, and interviews, the study aims to document these patterns and assess their implications for language learning and cultural identity. The findings will contribute to theories of bilingual lexical organization and inform pedagogical strategies that harness the benefits of bilingualism while mitigating potential drawbacks (Okafor, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although bilingualism is known to influence semantic mapping, there is limited research on its specific effects on Igbo among university students in Anambra. Preliminary data indicate that cross-linguistic interference may alter traditional semantic networks, potentially impacting academic performance and cultural identity (Ibe, 2023). This study seeks to analyze these effects and propose educational interventions.
